Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 to Feature Exynos 2500 Chip, Marking a First for Foldables
Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 7 might break the norm for foldable phones by using Samsung’s own Exynos 2500 chip. Historically, Samsung has relied on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors for its foldable devices, but cost considerations seem to have pushed the company to opt for its in-house Exynos 2500 SoC for this model. This will make the Galaxy Z Flip 7 the first foldable in the company’s history to feature an Exynos chip, despite some production challenges with the chip’s yield, which remains below 60%.
The decision to use the Exynos 2500 is largely driven by cost-saving measures, as Samsung can produce its own chips at a significantly lower cost than Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite. The flip foldable is expected to enter mass production in May, with around 200,000 units in the initial batch. While rumors initially pointed to the device using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite, Samsung’s foundry division has reportedly resolved the yield issues surrounding the Exynos chip, making it a more viable option.
Despite the new chip, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 may not feature major upgrades compared to its predecessor. It is expected to retain much of the same design, though with larger inner and outer displays. The device will likely include a bigger 4,300mAh battery to offset any potential increase in power consumption from the Exynos chip. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will reportedly stick with the Snapdragon 8 Elite, offering larger upgrades this year.
