Google Gemini has introduced a long-awaited Temporary Chat feature, giving users the ability to start private conversations that won’t appear in the Recent Chats list or be used for model training and personalization. Similar to ChatGPT’s feature of the same name, Temporary Chat ensures added privacy without requiring users to log out of Gemini. The update is now available across the Gemini app for Android and iOS and on the web, as reported by 9to5Google. Users can enable it by tapping the dashed-out chat icon next to the “New Chat” button in the Gemini interface.
While Temporary Chat supports popular Gemini tools like image creation with Imagen (including Gemini 2.5 Flash Image), conversations remain temporary and automatically expire after 72 hours. These sessions won’t be retrievable even within that timeframe, so exiting the chat means starting fresh. Although this may seem inconvenient, it’s a significant upgrade from having to sign out to prevent chats from being stored. The feature works much like Incognito Mode in web browsers, offering a secure space for queries you don’t want saved. Currently, Temporary Chat is available only for personal Google accounts, with no access for school or work profiles yet.
